Chelmsford City was originally established as Great Leighs in April 2008 but went into administration after just nine months. It was bought by Betfred co-owner Fred Done in 2013 and reopened and renamed in January 2015.
The all-weather track's proximity to Newmarket means Chelmsford Races attract plenty of horses from top yards and hosts close to 60 meetings per year.

Chelmsford City's biggest meeting is in mid-June with the most valuable evening card in the UK staged on the Wednesday. The feature is the track's most prestigious contest, the Listed Queen Charlotte Fillies' Stakes, which was won in 2019 by former 1000 Guineas hero Billesdon Brook.
The very next day is a popular Ladies Day, one of a number of cards followed by live music at Essex's only racecourse.
