Where is Gowran Park Racecourse?
Gowran Park Racecourse is 1km south of the village of Gowran off the R448 and 15km east of Kilkenny.
Kilkenny and Thomastown train stations are under 15km away with a free shuttle bus service from Kilkenny Castle on racedays.
What is Gowran Park Racecourse Famous For?
The first Gowran Races were held in 1914 in its current location on the Annely Estate. In 1952, it was the venue for the first racecourse commentary in Ireland.
It now stages 17 fixtures throughout the year with just over half of those on the flat. While it is best known as a jumps track, Guineas winners Refuse To Bend and Henry The Navigator both won Gowran maidens as two-year-olds.
Track Specifics at Gowran Park Racecourse
Gowran Park is a right-handed undulating galloping one-and-a-half mile (2400m) tri-oval. The home straight measures three furlongs (600m) and is uphill making stamina, especially in soft ground, an asset.
Front runners tend to go well and, on the flat, a low draw is favoured at trips of a mile (1600m) and under. In steeplechases, the fences are grouped together with four in fairly quick succession on the back straight and three after the turn for home.
Biggest Meetings at Gowran Park Racecourse
Thyestes Chase Day in mid-January is the track's showpiece with the eponymous feature a Grade A handicap steeplechase over three miles and a furlong (5000m). The Grade 2 Galmoy Hurdle is also on the card.
The Grade 2 Gowran Park Champion Chase in early October has been won by some fine horses down the years. Kicking King took it back in 2004 with Sizing Europe a four-time winner from 2011-2014.
Gowran's flat highlight is the Group 3 Denny Cordell Lavarack Fillies Stakes in late September.
