Where is Hamilton Park Racecourse?
Hamilton Park Racecourse is on the B7071 Bothwell Road just over 1km north of the centre of Hamilton. It is approximately 20km south-east of Glasgow via the M74.
Hamilton West is the closest rail station and 15 minutes' walk from the main entrance.
What is Hamilton Park Racecourse Famous For?
The first Hamilton Races were held in 1782 just south of the town in Chatelherault with Hamilton Palace staging jumps meetings sporadically from 1888 until 1907. The current racecourse was established in 1926 and held Britain's first evening fixture in 1947.
Hamilton hosts flat racing throughout the summer and is well known for its after-racing and stand alone music concerts. It is also home to the Lanark Silver Bell, reviving the handicap 31 years after the closure of nearby Lanark Racecourse in 1977. The original trophy dates back to 1165.
Hamilton Park Racecourse Track Specifics
Hamilton Park is very undulating with a sharp uphill right-handed loop followed by a downhill section and then a steep climb to the finish. In longer races, that uphill finish is taken first as a downhill descent before a left-turn and the loop. There is also a straight six-furlong (1200m) sprint track.
Long-striding gallopers are unsuited by the incline changes and Hamilton has its fair share of course specialists. Horses freewheeling on the dip close to home can find the finish very hard work.
Biggest Meeting's at Hamilton Park Racecourse
Hamilton's season highlight is the Glasgow Stakes Friday Racenight in mid-July with the eponymous feature a Listed race for three-year-olds over a mile and three furlongs (2200m). Also on the card is the valuable Scottish Stewards' Cup handicap over six furlongs.
