What is Limerick Racecourse Famous For?
The first Limerick Races were held in 1790 with a number of venues used before Greenpark which staged meetings for 130 years – and hosted US President John F. Kennedy in 1963 – until its closure in 1999.
The current racecourse at Greenmount was opened in 2001 and is now one of Ireland's top dual-purpose tracks. It stages 18 fixtures a year including St Patrick's Weekend, National Student Raceday in early April and four summer flat cards followed by live music.
Track Specifics at Limerick Racecourse
Limerick is a right-handed undulating galloping 11-furlong (2200m) oval. There is a stiff climb on the back straight – which has a slight kink to the left - and then it's downhill all the way to the slightly uphill home straight.
Five of the seven fences are in the back straight with two on the home straight and a run-in of just a furlong (200m). The hurdles track is to the inside of the chase course making the first turn quite sharp. Speedy front runners are suited on good ground with testing conditions bringing stayers into play.
Biggest Meetings at Limerick Racecourse
The four-day Christmas Racing Festival starts on St Stephen's Day (Boxing Day in Britain) and is the season highlight. The opening day features the track's only Grade 1, the Faugheen Novice Chase named after the 2019 winner and Champion Hurdle hero. The Munster National on Ladies Day in mid-October is the other jumps standout.
The most valuable race on the flat is the Listed Martin Molony Stakes the day before the Munster National.
