Where is Pontefract Racecourse?
Pontefract Racecourse is in Pontefract Park, just to the west of the town. It is off the A639 1km south of J32 of the M62.
Pontefract Tanshelf rail station is a five-minute walk from the track with the journey from Leeds taking 30 minutes. Pontefract Monkhill, Pontefract Baghill and Glasshoughton are also within 5km. Four buses connect Pontefract Park to local towns as well as Leeds City Centre.
What is Pontefract Racecourse Famous For?
In 1648, racing took place nearby between soldiers of Oliver Cromwell who had besieged Pontefract Castle. But the inaugural Pontefract Races are believed to be held in 1790. From 1802, the racecourse became the first to sell members' badges which offered 20-year admission and helped fund the grandstand.
Pontefract staged steeplechases around the middle of the 19th century but it has been a flat racing venue ever since and now holds around 15 meetings every summer. Afternoon race meetings used to start at 2.45pm to allow local miners to attend after completing the morning shift. This ended when the colliery closed in 2002.
Pontefract Racecourse Track Specifics
In 1983, Pontefract was converted from a horseshoe-shaped track into a left-handed two-mile (3200m) oval making it the longest flat circuit in Britain. It is very undulating with a steep uphill finish of around three furlongs (600m). Stamina is a real asset but front-runners and those drawn low (on the inside) are also favoured.
