Where is Redcar Racecourse?
Redcar Racecourse is in the North Yorkshire seaside town just off the A1085. It is 15km east of Middlesbrough along the A66 and A1085.
Redcar Central rail station is a leisurely 10-minute walk from Redcar Races with a journey time of under 15 minutes from Middlesbrough and just over an hour from York.
What is Redcar Racecourse Famous For?
Redcar Sands staged racing from the early 18th century before having to stop in 1870 due to new Jockey Club admission regulations. Two years later, the first Redcar Races were held at the current site with the first grandstand completed in 1875. It holds close to 20 flat meetings per year from April to early November.
Redcar Racecourse Track Specifics
Redcar is a narrow left-handed one mile and six-furlong (2800m) oval. It is very flat with long straights and two sharp banked bends. There is also a one-mile (1600m) straight course which incorporates the five-furlong (1000m) run-in.
The length of the home straight makes front-runners liable to be sitting ducks but its lack of undulations makes coming from off the pace on fast ground a difficult proposition.
Biggest Meeting's at Redcar Racecourse
Redcar's most famous and lucrative race is the Listed Two-Year-Old Trophy on the first Saturday in October. The six-furlong (1200m) contest regularly attracts big fields and is part of the Oktoberfest Beer Festival card which also boasts the Listed Guisborough Stakes and the Racing TV Straight-Mile Series Final. As far as spectator numbers are concerned, Ladies Day in mid-June is Redcar's biggest meeting.
