What is Roscommon Racecourse Famous For?
Racing in Roscommon was first staged in 1837 by the British Army but the first official Roscommon Races took place in 1885. Recent upgrading has made this a popular track with racegoers and trainers alike.
It now stages nine fixtures from May to September, all on either Monday or Tuesday, with the first eight being evening cards. Five are on the flat with four over jumps.
Roscommon Racecourse Track Specifics
Roscommon is a right-handed, largely flat, rectangular nine-furlong (1800m) circuit with sharp turns .The three-furlong (600m) home straight is slightly uphill but prominent speedier types still tend to fare better than out-and-out gallopers
There is a run-in of under a furlong (200m) from the last flight, with the easy fences making it a good track for novice chasers. On the flat, there is a chute for a one-and-a-half mile (2400m) start at the top of the home straight.
Biggest Meetings at Roscommon Racecourse
Ladies Day on the first or second Monday in July is Roscommon's biggest meeting and includes its premier flat race, the Listed Lenebane Stakes. There is a National Hunt card the following evening..
Over jumps, the Grade 3 Kilbegnet Novice Chase is the highlight on the season's final card in late September, with the Connacht National on day two of the June meeting also popular
