Where is Uttoxeter Racecourse?
Uttoxeter Racecourse is to the east of the Staffordshire town off the A518. It is 2km south of the A50 which connects to both the M6 and M1.
Uttoxeter rail station is adjacent to the racecourse, with a journey time of 25 minutes from both Stoke-on-Trent to the west and Derby to the east.
What is Uttoxeter Racecourse Famous For?
Uttoxeter Racecourse did not open until 1907, taking over meetings from Keele Park, just west of Stoke-on-Trent, which closed the previous year.
A land dispute after World War II threatened permanent closure but Uttoxeter reopened in 1952. Northern Racing's takeover in 1988, led by Sir Stan Clarke, resulted in massive upgrading, making Uttoxeter one of the top National Hunt tracks in the country. It now hosts 25 meetings throughout the year.
York remains one of Britain's top flat tracks and hosts 18 fixtures each summer.
Uttoxeter Racecourse Track Specifics
Uttoxeter is a left-handed sharp one-and-a-quarter mile (2000m) oval with an 'S' bend in the back straight. While it is primarily a speed track, conditions can become very testing in the winter, placing increased demands on stamina.
Biggest Meetings at Uttoxeter Racecourse
The Listed Midlands Grand National, held on the Saturday following March's Cheltenham Festival, is the track's biggest race. Lord Gyllene, owned by Clarke, was second in 1997 before winning the famous Monday Grand National at Aintree three weeks later.
Uttoxeter's other racing highlight, the Listed Summer Cup, is at the end of June. Formerly the Summer National, it was rebranded in 2012 with its distance reduced to three and a quarter miles (5000m).
