Where is Wexford Racecourse?
Wexford Racecourse is to the west of Wexford town on the R679 Newtown Road. It is close to the N11 and 55km east of Waterford via the N25.
Wexford train station is to the north of town and a 20-minute walk away. There are regular buses from the station through town to Waterford General Hospital close to the track.
What is Wexford Racecourse Famous For?
The first Wexford Races were held in the 1870s but these ceased in 1902 before the current racecourse in Bettyville was opened in 1951.
In 2015, the track was extended and reconfigured from right-handed to left-handed. The following year brought the end of flat racing with Wexford now staging 11 National Hunt fixtures from March to October. Three are evening meetings in the summer with Wexford's renowned sunny atmosphere matching the weather.
Wexford Racecourse Track specifics
Wexford is a left-handed undulating 10-furlong (2200m) oval with easier turns than in its previous incarnation. There is now a climb from the home turn into the uphill finish with gallopers now given more of a chance to make their stamina count against speedier types.
The undulations mean ground conditions can vary at different points on the course, but Wexford is considered a fairer test than before its modification.
Wexford Racecourse’s Biggest Meeting
Ladies Day on the last Friday of July is always popular but Wexford's biggest race is the Listed M.W. Hickey Memorial Chase on the last Monday of October. That card concludes the two-day meeting which brings the curtain down on Wexford's season.
