Where is Wolverhampton Racecourse?

Wolverhampton Racecourse is 3km north of Wolverhampton off the A449 Stafford Road and 5km south of the M54 J2.

Wolverhampton rail station is to the east of the city centre with buses 62 and 62A stopping near the bottom of Dunstall Park, which leads to the track.

What is Wolverhampton Racecourse Famous For?

The first Wolverhampton Races were held in Broad Meadows in 1825 but this was closed in 1878 and replaced by the large municipal West Park. Dunstall Park was marked out as a new venue and held its first meeting in 1887.

A fibresand all-weather track was laid alongside the turf with floodlights and stands installed in 1993 and was replaced by Polytrack in 2004, with a Tapeta surface then installed in 2014.

Wolverhampton hosts 80 meetings per year, making it Britain's busiest racecourse.

Wolverhampton Racecourse Track Specifics

Wolverhampton is a flat left-handed mile (1600m) oval with tight bends and a short two-furlong (400m) run-in.

It is viewed as a fair track although low draws (to the inside) are preferred. There are chutes for six-furlong (1200m) and seven-furlong (1400m) starts.

Biggest Meetings at Wolverhampton Racecourse

The quality of racing has improved markedly since the inauguration of the All-Weather Championships in 2013.

Wolverhampton hosts numerous qualifiers ahead of Lingfield's Finals Day on Good Friday including the Listed Lady Wulfruna Stakes, Wolverhampton's only black-type race, in early March.

The last weekend of August sees a two-day meeting with musical performers after the cards on a Friday evening and Saturday afternoon, the latter being Ladies Day.
