In this article, we look at the leading contenders for the 2021 Ballon d’Or in the eyes of the leading betting sites, with Raheem Sterling and Harry Kane flying the flag for England after impressive showings during the 2020 European Championships.

When it comes to winning individual prizes in football, there is no award bigger than the Ballon d’Or and there is lots of speculation when it comes to the 2021 prize now that the 2020 European Championship and the 2021 Copa America have concluded and the new club season is under way.

New Paris St-Germain signing Lionel Messi heads the betting to win the 2021 Ballon d’Or and that’s hardly a surprise following Argentina’s Copa America success which was, incredibly, the first time Messi got his hands on the trophy in his illustrious career. However, he’s already a six-time winner of the Balloon d'Or and it’s no surprise the bookies are keeping him onside. However, there are others in line to scoop the accolade.

Portugal led by Cristiano Ronaldo, who has won the Balloon d'Or five times, exited Euro 2020 at the Round of 16 stage, but he is sure to canvas plenty of votes after scoring five goals during the group stage of the tournament before his country bowed out to Belgium.

Lionel Messi - 1/3

Lionel Messi is the 2021 Ballon d’Or betting favourite and his odds took an almighty tumble following Argentina’s triumph in the 2021 Copa America. This was the first time that the forward had won this South American international football tournament, with the striker having recently sealed a move to Paris Saint-Germain where he will now hope to land multiple trophies including the Champions League for a fifth time.

Messi was the strong betting favourite for this global soccer prize before he made the move from Barcelona, although he’s now likely to set Ligue 1 alight when partnering with Neymar and Kylian Mbappe. It seems probable that PSG will win the domestic silverware given the squad at their disposal and they’re now favourites to win the Champions League too.

Perhaps the bookies have priced Messi too short for a prize which is down to the number of votes canvassed by each player. However, the maestro has such a strong track record and that Copa America success was another high point of a glittering career.

Jorginho - 7/1

What a season 2020/21 was for Chelsea midfielder Jorginho. In May, he helped Chelsea beat Manchester City to win the Champions League and a couple of months later, he was part of the Italian team that beat England in the final of Euro 2020.

Jorginho was in contention to be named Player of the Tournament, but he was pipped to that accolade by his goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma who saved three of England's penalties in the shoot-out.

The Italian will hope to play an important role for club and country this season as Chelsea look to win the Premier League and defend their Champions League title while internationally, he will want to help Italy look to qualify for next year's World Cup.

Robert Lewandowski - 5/1

There appears to be a black mark over Robert Lewandowski. Despite the fact the striker has scored 40+ goals for Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich in each of the past six seasons, he has never been placed in the top three of the Ballon d’Or voting. This year could be different.

He scored 48 goals for Bayern in the 2020/21 season and looks all set to continue that streak into 2021/22. The only issue for him is Poland’s early exit from Euro 2020, although his three goals in the tournament highlighted just how strong he has been this year.

N'Golo Kante - 16/1

Kante was the subject of a lot of bets to be crowned Player of the Tournament at Euro 2020, although France's last 16 exit denied him a shot at that individual prize. Nevertheless, the Chelsea midfielder had previously played a key role when it came to steering the Blues to success in the 2021 Champions League final, with the midfielder now on the Ballon d'Or shortlist and the unsung star is getting rave reviews.

Perhaps Kante is more likely to scoop the award when Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo come to the real twilight of their career, although he can rightly claim to be the best defensive midfielder in the world and he's sure to be winning a lot of votes for several years to come.

Kevin De Bruyne - 20/1

Having won the Premier League at a canter with Manchester City last season, De Bruyne was unlucky not to influence the Champions League Final against Chelsea as much as he would have liked, but a fractured cheekbone meant his final was ended early.

De Bruyne recovered to feature at Euro 2020 where he was one of the outstanding players of the tournament, with the midfielder coming on against Denmark to turn the game completely on its head. Many regard him as the best player in the world for this particular position and he's likely to propel the Citizens further forward in his time at the Etihad.

No Premier League player has won the Ballon d’Or since Ronaldo for Manchester United back in 2009, although it looks a matter of time before KDB finally lands this accolade, whether it's this year or some time in the not-too-distant future.

Kylian Mbappe - 33/1

The golden boy of France missed the crucial penalty in France’s shoot-out defeat to Switzerland at Euro 2020 that saw the reigning world champions exit at the last-16 stage. But Kylian Mbappe may still get the gong come December.

The 22-year-old had an indifferent season with PSG last term where the French giants failed to win the Ligue 1 title or the Champions League. This has not been Mbappe’s best year to date but his raw talent and ability to change games will almost certainly attract votes. He needs to step up his game between now and the end of voting to keep him in the running for this year’s Ballon d’Or.
