In this article, we look at the leading contenders for the 2022 Ballon d’Or in the eyes of the leading betting sites and best betting apps, with some familiar names at the top of the list.

Individual prizes in football, don't come any bigger than the Ballon d’Or, and there is already lots of speculation regarding the 2022 prize after Lionel Messi won the 2021 award, thus bringing his running total to seven.

Paris Saint-Germain striker Lionel Messi is no longer among the favourites to win the 2022 Ballon d’Or, and that’s hardly a surprise. The former Barca forward couldn't help the Ligue 1 side go deep in the Champions League, and it looks as though his stranglehold could be coming to an end.

Mohamed Salah was the favourite in the first few months of the year, although it is Karim Benzema who now heads the betting market, and the Frenchman was sensational for Real Madrid throughout the 2021/22 season. Salah and Sadio Mane are next in the betting, while Kylian Mbappe is also among the favourites for this prestigious award.

Karim Benzema - 1/5

The Champions League was hugely exciting last season and Real Madrid went on an almighty adventure which saw them put a number of high-profile teams to the sword.

Los Merengues were crowned champions of Europe after chinning Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea, Manchester City and then Liverpool to lift aloft the trophy. Against the first two opponents, the evergreen Karim Benzema plundered hat-tricks to help his team go through. Against PSG, the forward scored three quickfire goals at the Bernabeu to turn the tie on its head considering Real were trailing 2-0 on aggregate. At Stamford Bridge, Benzema scored another three and then managed the extra-time winner in the second leg.

Benzema also grabbed his team by the scruff of the neck at the Etihad Stadium when scoring twice as part of a 4-3 defeat against Manchester City. This was followed by a 3-1 extra-time win, which saw the Frenchman score the winning penalty.

The bookies have certainly taken notice of his achievements, and the money has come in for a forward who is finding his best form at a later stage of his career.

Robert Lewandowski - 20/1

Robert Lewandowski emerged as one of the favourites to win the 2021 Ballon d'Or award prior to the voting closing. The Poland striker has scored over 40 goals for Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich in each of the past six seasons, but he had never been placed in the top three of the Ballon d’Or voting before 2021, when he finished second.

Poland exited early from Euro 2020, but Lewandowski's three goals in the tournament highlighted just how strong he was in 2021. He was among the early favourites to scoop the 2022 award but he has drifted thanks to Benzema's heroics. Lewandowski scored 48 goals for Bayern in the 2020/21 season with 41 coming in the league to break Gerd Muller's 49-year-old record of 40 in a single season.

Lewandowski has been the model of consistency over the last six seasons, and winning the Ballon d'Or would be just reward for his goalscoring achievements. Had it not been for Messi and his rivalry with Cristiano Ronaldo, the Pole might have had his name engraved on the trophy before now.

Mohamed Salah - 14/1

Mohamed Salah was the market mover to win the 2022 Ballon d'Or a few months ago, although the Liverpool forward has drifted in the betting now. The player struggled for form despite the Reds challenging for a potential quadruple. It appeared as though his exertions for Egypt in the African Cup of Nations and World Cup play-offs took their toll for a player who has been negotiating a new contract for a while.

The top bookies still regard Salah as a leading player for the Ballon d'Or award this year, although the arrival of Luis Diaz has taken some of the limelight away from Salah, and it's clear that the performance level of Sadio Mane has been higher in the past few weeks.

On the flip side, the Egyptian King has still had a great season in a Liverpool shirt and remains the pin-up star of the team. He will lead the attack from the beginning of the 2022-23 season having confirmed that he's remaining at the club this summer.

Sadio Mane - 12/1

While Liverpool were in the hunt for a historic quadruple during the 2021-22 season, there was always going to be tremendous focus on their attacking players. Mohamed Salah is the main talisman of the Reds team although it was noticeable that Sadio Mane had been in better scoring form towards the end of the campaign.

Mane scored at El Madrigal to help the Merseyside outfit into the Champions League final, and we shouldn't forget it was Mane's Senegal that beat Salah's Egypt in the AFCON final earlier this year. It was the same outcome when the countries clashed in a World Cup play-off.

Kylian Mbappe - 20/1

Kylian Mbappe was the subject of a lot of bets to be crowned Player of the Tournament at Euro 2020, although France's last-16 exit denied him a shot at that individual prize.

Nevertheless, the Paris Saint-Germain forward helped Les Bleus win the Nations League title and perhaps 2022 will be the season where Mbappe engineers a move to Real Madrid. This could boost his credentials for the Ballon d'Or. Ballon d'Or betting typically won't have cash out available, though, so that might need to be factored in before backing him.

There is no doubting that Mbappe is one of the best players in the world when he's on form, although much depends on whether he exits the Parc des Princes during the summer along with how he continues to perform for his country.

Lionel Messi - 25/1

Lionel Messi can never be easily discounted considering some people will vote for him simply because he is Lionel Messi. He wasn't an altogether deserving winner of the 2021 award, although it would currently take a leap of faith to see the forward land the spoils in the current calendar year.

Messi hasn't exactly been a flop for Paris Saint-Germain this season, although he's only managed 14 for the season at the time of writing. Several of these have come for his native Argentina, and it's arguable that both Kylian Mbappe and Neymar have outshone the legendary forward in the French capital.
