When it comes to winning individual prizes in football, there is none bigger than the Ballon d’Or and there is lots of speculation when it comes to the 2021 prize now that the 2020 European Championship and the 2021 Copa America have reached a conclusion. Some of the world’s best players featured at one of these tournaments and their performance has had a big bearing on the overall betting market.

Lionel Messi heads the betting to win the 2021 Ballon d’Or and that’s hardly a surprise following Argentina’s Copa America win which was incredibly the first time that the player had won this competition. However, he’s already a six-time winner of this prize and it’s little wonder the bookies are keeping him onside. However, his club future is uncertain and perhaps there are others in line to scoop the honours.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal exited Euro 2020 at the last sixteen stage of the competition although the Juventus forward is still regarded as a leading contender on the 2021 Ballon d’Or contender and is sure to canvas many votes after scoring five goals during the group stage of the tournament before his country bowed out to Belgium.

In this article, we look at the leading contenders for the 2021 Ballon d’Or in the eyes of the bookmakers, with Raheem Sterling and Harry Kane flying the flag for England after impressive showings during the 2020 European Championship.

Lionel Messi

Lionel Messi is the 2021 Ballon d’Or betting favourite and his betting odds took an almighty tumble following Argentina’s triumph in the 2021 Copa America. This was the first time that the Barcelona forward had won this South American international football tournament, helping La Albiceleste to score a 1-0 victory over Brazil in the final and this was one of the crowning moments of his career.

Messi has now been punted into 1/2 to win the prize, although Barca did not have a vintage 2020/21 season and the player’s future at the Catalan club is far from certain considering that they have grave financial problems. On the flip side, the narrative is set for the 34-year-old to be landing this trophy once again.

Kevin De Bruyne

Having won the Premier League at a canter with Manchester City, De Bruyne was unlucky not to influence the Champions League Final against Chelsea as much as he would have liked, but a fractured cheekbone meant his final was ended early.

De Bruyne recovered to feature at Euro 2020 where he was one of the outstanding players of the tournament, with the midfielder coming on against Denmark to turn the game completely on its head. Many regard him as the best player in the world for this particular position and he's likely to propel the Citizens further forward.

There hasn’t been a Premier League player to win the Ballon d’Or since Ronaldo for Manchester United back in 2009, although it looks a matter of time before KDB finally lands this accolade whether it's this year or some time in the not-too-distant future.

N'Golo Kante

Kante was the subject of a massive gamble to be crowned Player of the Tournament at Euro 2020, although France's last sixteen exit denied him a shot at that individual prize. Nevertheless, the Chelsea midfielder had previously played a key role when it came to steering the Blues to success in the 2021 Champions League final, with the midfielder now on the Ballon d'Or shortlist and the unsung star is getting rave reviews.

Perhaps Kante is more likely to scoop the award when Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo come to the real twilight of their career, although he can rightly claim to be the best defensive midfielder in the world and he's sure to be canvassing lots of votes for several years to come.

Robert Lewandowski

There appears to be a black mark over Robert Lewandowski. Despite the fact the striker has scored 40+ goals for club side Bayern Munich in each of the past six seasons, he has never placed in the top three of the Ballon d’Or. This year it could be different.

He scored 48 goals for Bayern in the 2020/21 season and looks all set to continue that streak into 2021/22. The only issue for him is Poland’s exit from Euro 2020, although his three goals in the tournament highlighted just how strong he has been this year.

Kylian Mbappe

The golden boy of France missed the crucial penalty in France’s shoot-out loss to Switzerland at Euro 2020 that saw the reigning world champions exit at the last-16 stage. But Kylian Mbappe may still get the gong come December.

The 22-year-old had an eventful season with PSG where the French giants failed to win the Ligue 1 title or the Champions League. This has not been Mbappe’s best year to date but his raw talent and ability to change games will almost certainly attract votes. He needs a strong start to the 2021/22 season, however, to keep him in the running for this year’s Ballon d’Or.
