In this article, we look at the leading contenders for the 2022 Ballon d’Or in the eyes of the leading betting sites, with some familiar names at the top of the list.

When it comes to winning individual prizes in football, there is no award bigger than the Ballon d’Or and there is lots of speculation when it comes to the 2022 prize now that Lionel Messi won the 2021 award, thus bringing his running total to seven.

Paris St-Germain striker Lionel Messi heads the betting to win the 2022 Ballon d’Or and that’s hardly a surprise considering that the player continues to perform at the peak of his powers. Perhaps the former Barca forward will land the Champions League under Mauricio Pochettino and PSG are certainties to land the Ligue 1 title.

Cristiano Ronaldo, who has won the Ballon d'Or five times, became the all-time leading goalscorer in international football thanks to the five goals he scored during Euro 2020. Bayern Munich's Robert Lewandowski continues to be as prolific as ever for club and country and he is in line to win his first Ballon d'Or after setting a new record for goals scored in a single Bundesliga season.

Mohamed Salah has also emerged as a candidate after a blistering start to the season for Liverpool. The Egyptian became the 30th player to score 100 Premier League goals and his hat-trick against Manchester United at Old Trafford in a 5-0 win will forever be remembered by Reds fans.

Lionel Messi - 5/1

Lionel Messi was the 2021 Ballon d’Or betting favourite for a while and his odds took an almighty tumble following Argentina’s triumph in the 2021 Copa America. This was the first time that the forward had won this South American international football tournament, with the striker having recently sealed a move to Paris Saint-Germain where he will now hope to land multiple trophies including the Champions League for a fifth time.

Messi is now likely to set Ligue 1 alight when partnering with Neymar and Kylian Mbappe. It seems probable that PSG will win the domestic silverware given the squad at their disposal and they’re now among the favourites to win the Champions League too.

Despite a less than successful start to his career in Paris, Messi is still being respected by the bookies when it comes to the 2022 award and it's clear that this player will continue to canvas votes.

Robert Lewandowski - 5/1

Robert Lewandowski emerged as one of the favourites to win the 2021 Ballon d'Or award prior to the voting closing. The Poland striker has scored over 40 goals for Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich in each of the past six seasons, but he had never been placed in the top three of the Ballon d’Or voting before 2021.

Poland exited early from Euro 2020, but Lewandowski's three goals in the tournament highlighted just how strong he was in 2021 and he is now joint-favourite to scoop the 2022 award. Lewandowski scored 48 goals for Bayern in the 2020/21 season with 41 coming in the league to break Gerd Muller's 49-year-old record of 40 in a single season.

Lewandowski has been the model of consistency over the last six seasons and winning the Ballon d'Or will be just reward for his goalscoring achievements. Had it not been for Messi and his rivalry with Cristiano Ronaldo, the Pole might have had his name engraved on the trophy before now.

Cristiano Ronaldo - 6/1

Cristiano Ronaldo arrived at Old Trafford to a fanfare in August 2021 and he experienced a rocky start under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, although the Manchester United number 7 continues to be a constant source of goals. He fired two against Arsenal before Christmas and has found the net in all of the Red Devils' Champions League clashes.

Ronaldo will now hope United can be successful in the Premier League and the main focus is helping them to achieve fourth place, with the Portuguese likely to be on the shortlist providing that he continues to fire goals.

Mohamed Salah - 6/1

Mohamed Salah has climbed up the market to win the Ballon d'Or thanks to the superb start he has made to the 2021/22 season. The Egyptian has been unplayable for many of Europe's best defenders and his knack of scoring goals has earned him a place near the top of this list.

The 29-year-old has started the season strongly and is hoping to go one step further than last season when he finished second to Harry Kane in the Golden Boot race. Salah has been the leading scorer in England's top flight twice in the last four seasons.

If he stays fit, Salah will certainly be in contention to win a third Golden Boot award as he leads the line for Liverpool who will be looking to win their second Premier League title in three seasons.

Kylian Mbappe - 8/1

Kylian Mbappe was the subject of a lot of bets to be crowned Player of the Tournament at Euro 2020, although France's last 16 exit denied him a shot at that individual prize.

Nevertheless, the Paris Saint-Germain forward helped Les Bleus win a recent Nations League title and perhaps 2022 will be the season where Mbappe engineers a move to Real Madrid. This could boost his credentials when it comes to securing the Ballon d'Or.

There is no doubting that Mbappe is one of the best players in the world when he's on form and we'd expect him to produce the goods for Paris Saint-Germain this term despite having to clash with Messi and Neymar for the limelight.

Erling Haaland - 10/1

Erling Haaland has recently returned from injury and looks set to battle it out with Robert Lewandowski when it comes to German Bundesliga top scorer. The young Norwegian continues to be linked with a move to a big European club but wants to try and land a Bundesliga title with Borussia Dortmund this term.

Haaland is a brilliant forward who can score an array of goals, with this player having pace and power along with the ability to win aerial challenges. The big downside is that Norway will never be a highly competitive international outfit.

Kevin de Bruyne - 10/1

Having won the Premier League at a canter with Manchester City last season, De Bruyne was unlucky not to influence the Champions League Final against Chelsea as much as he would have liked, but a fractured cheekbone meant his final was ended early.

De Bruyne recovered to feature at Euro 2020 where he was one of the outstanding players of the tournament, with the midfielder coming on against Denmark to turn the game completely on its head. Many regard him as the best player in the world for this particular position and he's likely to propel the Citizens further forward in his time at the Etihad.

No Premier League player has won the Ballon d’Or since Ronaldo for Manchester United back in 2009, although it looks a matter of time before KDB finally lands this accolade, whether it's this year or some time in the not-too-distant future.
