Can City Maintain Impressive Record After Internationals?

The international break can come at a good time for teams struggling for form and they can come at a bad time for those teams who have strung a number of wins together before their players represent their countries. We take a look at which Premier League teams have the best and worst record after international breaks.

The Premier League returns this weekend after the first international break of the season. Tottenham are the only team yet to drop a point and they will hope to make it four wins from four this weekend when they travel to Crystal Palace who have two draws from their first three matches.

Tottenham’ north London rivals Arsenal are one of three teams yet to win a point alongside Norwich and Wolves. Mikel Arteta can ease the pressure on him by beating another pointless team Norwich at the Emirates on Saturday. Wolves hope they can pick up their first point when they travel to Watford.

The international break will have come at a good time for the three sides at the bottom of the table while Tottenham will hope they can pick up from where they left off before players were sent to all corners of the globe to represent their countries.

We take a look at which teams are better at returning to action following an international break and who struggle the most ahead of this weekend’s round of games.

City Lead The Way After An International Break

It’s perhaps no surprise to see Manchester City top of this list given the fact they have won three of the last four Premier League titles. Their squad is full of international players so Pep Guardiola won’t have had too many players to work with on the training ground during breaks, so to average 2.57 points per game in the last four seasons is a tremendous achievement.

Best Points Per Game After An International Break In Last Four Seasons

  • 2.57 - Man City (14 games)
  • 2.40 - Liverpool (15)
  • 2.33 - Norwich (3)
  • 2.16 - Aston Villa (6)
  • 2.14 - Man United (14)

The champions face a tricky trip to Leicester, who beat them in this season’s Community Shield last month, and the leading betting sites have them favourites to make it three wins in a row after losing their season opener at Tottenham.

City have won 12 of their last 14 fixtures played after an international break and that includes a 2-0 win at Leicester in April following the final international break of last season. The champions are 4/7 with MansionBet to win at Leicester.

Liverpool are next on the list taking 2.40 points a game after the Premier League takes a break for qualifiers. A 3-0 win at Arsenal in April extended their unbeaten run in games immediately after internationals. Man City’s 5-0 win in September 2017 was the last time Jurgen Klopp’s side lost after a fortnight’s break.

A trip to Leeds, who have drawn their last two games, will be a tough test for the Reds who drew 1-1 on their visit to Elland Road towards the end of last season. The visitors are 8/11 with William Hill to beat Leeds.

The league table does not look great for Norwich who have lost their opening three matches by a combined score of 10-1. They have yet to score from open play as their only goal this season came from a Teemu Pukki penalty in a 2-1 defeat at home to Leicester.

The Canaries travel to Arsenal on Saturday knowing the Emirates crowd are unhappy with the start their side have made. The international break came at the right time for both sides, but who will come out on top?

Norwich have played just three Premier League games after an international break in the last four seasons. Daniel Farke’s side have taken seven points from a possible nine and they pulled off a stunning 3-2 win against Manchester City in September 2019 so they will be hoping for another big scalp this weekend and they are 12/1 with BetVictor to win at the Emirates.

Can Newcastle Find A Change of Fortune?

After just three games, it looks like another season of struggle is on the cards for Newcastle, unless they can string a number of wins together that will help them move away from the relegation zone. One point from a possible nine has not helped Steve Bruce win over the disgruntled fans at St James’ Park.

The Magpies travel to Old Trafford on Saturday hoping to ruin the party to welcome back Cristiano Ronaldo to the Premier League and United. The omens are not great for the Geordies who have the worst record of any of the current teams in the top flight after an international break while the Red Devils are unbeaten in their last 14 post international fixtures.

Fewest Points Per Game After An International Break In Last Four Seasons

  • 0.93 - Newcastle (15)
  • 1.00 - Brighton (15)
  • 1.00 - Leeds (4)
  • 1.06 - Crystal Palace (15 games)
  • 1.06 - Southampton (15)

Six defeats in their last eight after a fortnight’s break does not bode well for Bruce and it would take a brave bettor to back the Magpies this weekend who are 14/1 with BetVictor to pull off a shock result.

Brighton and Leeds are two more sides hoping their fortunes can change after the break for World Cup qualifiers. Since the start of the 2017/18 season, Brighton have played 15 games immediately after an international break. They average one point per game after picking up just three wins in those fixtures.

The Seagulls have started the season well winning two of their three games but they went into the latest break on the back of a 2-0 defeat at home to Everton. Traveling to Brentford won’t be easy as the newly-promoted side have made an unbeaten start to life in the top flight with a win and two draws. The Bees are 17/10 with Betfair to beat Brighton who are 7/4 with Betfair to win.

Leeds are showing early signs of second season syndrome as they await their first win of the season. Two draws after losing their opener 5-1 at Manchester United has steadied the ship and Marcelo Bielsa will hope the last fortnight will have helped him come up with a game plan to beat Liverpool.

The west Yorkshire side have played four Premier League matches after an international break since their promotion and they have recorded just one win. Leeds are underdogs against the Reds and Bielsa’s side can be backed at 19/2 with BetVictor to get their first league win of the season.
