Wolverhampton Wanderers now enjoy a twelve point lead at the top of the Championship table following their 3-0 demolition of Brentford in their last league outing. They have received a massive injection of investment from new owners Fosun International and with Nuno Espirito Santo in the managerial hot-seat they have proved pretty much unstoppable in the second tier.
With the West Midlands side enjoying a hugely successful first-half of the season, it is no surprise to see the bookies installing them as huge odds-on favourites to lift the Championship title. Previous favourites Middlesbrough and Aston Villa have enjoyed some excellent performances but Wolves have been in a different class as they stormed to the top of the table.
Villa got off to a rather shaky start in their first stint back in the Championship last season and it was no huge shock to see them replace Roberto Di Matteo with Steve Bruce, the latter presiding over a somewhat unimpressive second half of the campaign. Nevertheless Bruce has plenty of experience behind him and he will certainly make excellent use of the sizeable funds available to him this season. John Terry was a notable arrival at Villa Park and this underlines the club's ambition as they look to secure promotion in 2017/18.
Fulham are another side looking to grab themselves a promotion back to the Premier League and while they came unstuck at the play-off semi-final stage last season, Slavisa Jovanovic will be hopeful that he can go all the way this term.
All three sides which made the drop from the top-flight at the end of last season have changed manager either close to or at the end of the last campaign, however Middlesbrough are the only one to remain in with a chance of climbing back up at the first time of asking. Sunderland and Hull City have struggled to find their feet in the second tier with the Black Cats looking seriously in danger of dropping even further.
Cardiff City, Bristol City and Sheffield United are twhreesurprise contenders for promotion following excellent campaigns thus far while Derby County look once again to be in the running.
