Ajax look likely to miss out on this season’s Dutch title, however silverware could yet come their way courtesy of the Europa League. Just two games stand between them and a place in the finals of the competition but standing in their way this week are a Lyon outfit which know that the tournament provides them with their only route into next season’s Champions League.
Ajax head into this clash having lost to Schalke and PSV Eindhoven, however the side were enjoying some excellent form prior to these defeats and one shouldn’t ignore the fact that the Dutch outfit have not lost at home since August 2016. They have triumphed in each of their Europa League games on home soil and as such will be brimming with confidence ahead of this midweek clash with Lyon.
Their French opponents haven’t enjoyed a successful campaign, especially away from home. They have triumphed in just seven of their 17 away matches in Ligue One and with just two European wins on the road, we envisage Ajax having the edge in this first-leg clash.
That said, whilst we’re not too optimistic about Lyon’s chances of securing a win on Wednesday evening, we believe that they will grab themselves what could prove to be a crucial away goal along the way. Goals scored away from home count for double in this tournament and as such there is very much an onus for sides to show plenty of attacking intent in their away matches. Indeed Lyon haven’t been struggling on the scoring front with goals in all of their last eighteen games in all competitions and we believe that they will contribute to the scoreline in Amsterdam on Wednesday evening.
