Group G was always going to be extremely tough and in many respects Albania have performed far better than anyone could have possibly imagined. Okay so there have been some slip-ups but although they remain far short of Spain and Italy in the race for automatic qualification for next summer's World Cup, they are in a good position to become best of the rest.
The Albanians reached the finals of last year's European Championships following what was an excellent qualifying campaign, however they were very unlucky not to build on that relative success in the qualifiers for the next major international competition.
They launched their campaign in excellent fashion by beating neighbours FYR Macedonia 2-1 in their opening match and followed that with a routine enough 2-0 win in Liechtenstein. Their next three games ended in defeat with no goals scored and a total of seven conceded although two of these matches were against Spain and Italy.
They will nevertheless be in high spirits ahead of this weekend's clash given that they thrashed Israel 3-0 in their last outing and we don't envisage any slip-ups from the home side when they host Liechtenstein.
Indeed Spain face Italy this weekend so Albania have a great chance to narrow the gap between themselves and whoever loses in Madrid (assuming that there is a loser). Liechtenstein have managed just a solitary goal with 24 conceded in the competition thus far and we expect that the hosts can make it back-to-back victories with an emphatic result on home turf.
