They chased Lincoln City all the way but in the end it just wasn’t enough and Tranmere Rovers now head into the play-offs in the hope that they can find their way back into the Football League. Just four points separated Rovers from table-topping Lincoln when the regular season drew to a close last weekend, three back-to-back victories for Micky Mellon’s men not enough to enable them to close the gap on an Imps outfit which were worthy champions.
Aldershot stand in Tranmere’s way this week and we don’t envisage too many problems for the visitors to the Recreation Ground on Wednesday evening. The two sides fought out a 2-2 draw at Prenton Park last month with the visitors firing themselves into the lead after just three minutes through the efforts of Matt McClure before Rovers responded with a Cole Stockton volley just nine minutes later. A goal apiece before the break proved to be the only additions to the scoreline and both managers will be hopeful of even better things this week.
This is certain to be a tough and closely-fought clash, however Tranmere have been outstanding in recent weeks. An incredibly hectic April schedule saw them win seven of their nine outings with just a solitary defeat. Solihull Moors were thrashed 9-0 along the way by a rampant Rovers and we see little reason to believe that another win won’t be coming their way on Wednesday evening.
That said, this looks set to be an evenly-fought affair. Aldershot have also enjoyed some sparkling form in recent weeks with seven wins and two draws in their last nine outings, therefore we expect the home side to find the net in this first-leg clash. Indeed a draw would be a decent enough result for Mellon’s men ahead of the return leg at Prenton Park, however Rovers should possess the edge and we’ll be backing them to head back to the Wirrall with a win in the bag.
