Argentina’s four-game winless run was a major blow in their quest to reach the World Cup 2018, however they managed to stop the rot by thrashing Colombia 3-0 in their last match of 2016 and as such they can climb their way into the automatic qualification places should they clinch the three points this week. The Argentinians sit just one point and a single place behind Chile as things stand and should they win on Thursday they could go third in the table.
Chile have been enjoying some excellent form of late with just two defeats in their last thirteen outings, this run including ten victories. Their last three qualifying matches have returned seven points although they suffered defeat at the hands of Argentina earlier in the qualifying campaign and their form on the road has been far from impressive with just one win in their last five games away from home.
Argentina may have been pretty poor last year but the timely win against Colombia will certainly prove to be the boost required as they head into the last six rounds of the World Cup qualifiers. Do we expect them to make it two on the bounce by bagging the three points against Chile this week? Indeed we do.
We also fancy Lionel Messi to get his name onto the scoresheet at some point. The Barcelona superstar is enjoying some excellent goal-scoring form of late, both for club and for country. He scored twice against Valencia last weekend to lift his season total to 40 for Barcelona and with seven goals in his last eight games we believe that he will set Argentina on the way to a crucial win on Thursday.
