Aston Villa’s drop from the Premier League at the end of last season was never really expected to be followed by an immediate return back to the top-flight, however the manner in which the Villans have struggled in the Championship has surprised even the most pessimistic pundits and a battle against relegation to League One could soon become a reality for the West Midlands side should they fail to pull their socks up.
Steve Bruce’s men are currently embarking upon a shocking run with no wins since Boxing Day and something needs to be done, but what? The January transfer window has slammed shut and Bruce now has to utilise what he currently has at his disposal. Indeed with five back-to-back defeats for the Villans heading into this weekend’s clash, things are looking far from rosy and the six point gap between Villa and the bottom three is starting to look pretty insignificant.
Can Steve Bruce’s men pull something out of the bag at the weekend? Indeed they can, but we’re not so sure what it will be. A defeat seems to be the obvious answer and while visiting Derby County can hardly be said to be enjoying the best of form at the moment, they should have little problem in overcoming a Villa side which on current form are looking destined to make a second successive drop.
