There will be at least one team from Spain in the Champions League semi-finals after Barca and Atleti were paired together and it’s slightly puzzling to see the former as strong favourites to reach the last four of the competition.
While Barcelona have been a household name at the business end of this competition for several seasons, they actually sit a point behind their opponents in the Primera Liga, with the Madrid side having surprisingly stayed the pace with the two giants of Spain this season.
Tata Martino’s side have built up a head of steam coming into this match after five straight victories and they were especially buoyed by a tremendous 4-3 win at the Bernabeu a fortnight ago which has hauled them back into the title race.
Saturday’s win at Espanyol saw Lionel Messi despatch a late penalty to claim three points and Barca are a best price 8/15 with Ladbrokes online to establish a first leg advantage before the return match at the Vicente Calderon.
Even so, Atletico Madrid have excellent recent form of their own, winning six straight matches and that includes Saturday’s 2-1 triumph away at Athletic Bilbao where Diego Costa and Koke helped the visitors to come from behind to claim three points.
The teams have already met three times this season and all three matches have ended in a draw, with Barcelona winning on away goals in the Super Cup back in August, while the two sides played out a goalless draw in January.
It suggests a cagey encounter on Tuesday and the draw is priced at 7/2, with the sides knowing each other particularly well and Barcelona will be wary of conceding an away goal against a side whose attack will be spearheaded by Diego Costa.
Costa has been linked with a move to Chelsea this summer and the 25-year-old will also be spearheading the Spanish attack at the 2014 World Cup, with Paddy Power going 15/2 about the forward stunning the Nou Camp by opening the scoring.
On the basis that these teams are evenly-matched, it doesn’t make any sense to see 9/4 about Atletico going through over the two legs, especially as they play the second leg match at the Vicente Calderon.
Of course, Barca have an in-form Messi now firing on all cylinders and BetVictor go 23/10 about the Argentine scoring the first goal of the game, although we should probably expect this match to be tense and tight.
