Both Barnsley and Ipswich Town finished their respective 2016/17 campaigns in a mid-table position and whilst they will each be hopeful of making a push towards the play-offs this season, we don’t fancy their chances in what promises to be a hugely competitive division. This clash between these two sides at Barnsley’s Oakwell promises to be a closely-fought affair in which we can expect a few goals along the way.
The Tykes have been something of a mixed bag in their pre-season campaign with a few heavy defeats and some equally heavy victories. They were disappointing towards the end of 2016/17 with no wins in their closing five Championship outings and at least one goal conceded in all-but-two of their last fifteen games. They continued in a similar vein on the opening day of the new campaign with a 3-1 defeat by Bristol City and they will he desperate to bounce back from this disappointment on Saturday afternoon.
Ipswich Town enjoyed a 1-0 win over Birmingham City in their first game last weekend with Joe Garner scoring the only goal of the game. Mick McCarthy’s men followed this up with a fine 2-0 win over Luton Town in the League Cup and the Tractor Boys will be confident of making it three wins on the bounce in South Yorkshire this weekend.
Indeed both sides are extremely capable of grinding out a win but Ipswich are looking the more impressive as things stand with two clean sheets from their opening two matches. Barnsley have leaked six goals in two outings and for that very reason we’ll be siding with the visitors on Saturday afternoon at a very generous 2/1.
