Sheffield Wednesday’s promotion ambitions have taken a battering in recent weeks. A 5-1 thrashing of Norwich City at Hillsborough gave no indication of the disappointments ahead, however since then the Owls have managed just a single point from their subsequent three Championship outings and they are now dangerously close to moving out of the top-six altogether.
Back-to-back 2-0 defeats to Aston Villa and Reading have left Carlos Carvalhal’s men just a single point above seventh-placed Fulham as we head towards this weekend’s round of fixtures and the side desperately need three points at Barnsley’s Oakwell Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Can they manage the vital win or will they suffer more disappointment this weekend? Given recent results it is hard to back the visitors with any confidence whatsoever, especially when one considers that they have managed just a solitary victory in their last six games. This poor run came on the back of a four-game winning streak and one wonders whether the Owls have run out of steam at a crucial stage of the season.
Either way, we feel that Carvalhal’s side will have their hands full when they make the short journey across to Barnsley this weekend and whilst the home side have been pretty hit and miss this season, they nevertheless sit comfortably in mid-table.
That said, their home record doesn’t exactly make for good reading with no wins in their last five outings at Oakwell although like Sheffield Wednesday they are at least having few problems in front of goal. The Owls have failed to find the net in their last two outings but put five past Norwich earlier this month and should score against the Tykes this weekend. Barnsley drew a blank at Norwich but prior to that they had scored all-but-one of their previous six games and whilst we don’t expect either side to collect the three points on Saturday afternoon, we do expect to see both nets bulging.
