Real Madrid dashed any hopes that Bayern Munich had of being crowned European champions by dumping the Bundesliga side out of the Champions League at the semi-final stage and Bayern’s progress towards another domestic title has faltered with just a solitary win in their last four Bundesliga outings. Can Bayern stop the rot when they face arch-rivals Borussia Dortmund in the last four of the DBP Pokal on Wednesday evening?
Dortmund waved goodbye to the Champions League at the quarter-final stage and as such their best chance of lifting silverware this season is in this competition. They have been faced with a huge task however, given that the last time these two sides clashed it was Bayern who triumphed to the tune of 4-1.
Dortmund were two goals down in the first ten minutes in that meeting before they pulled one back midway through the first-half. Nevertheless Bayern were dominant from that point onward and were successful in avenging their 1-0 defeat to Dortmund earlier in the season. Can Bayern inflict upon their rivals another defeat when the sides meet on Wednesday evening? We firmly believe that they can.
Bayern have been excellent at the Allianz Arena this season with no domestic defeats and Dortmund haven’t won there in three years, a sequence which we envisage being extended this week. That said, Dortmund have been no slouches on the goalscoring front with goals in each of their last fourteen games in all competitions and we expect them to find the back of the net on Wednesday.
Robert Lewandowski should also get his name onto the scoresheet against his former employers. The Pole has enjoyed great success since his arrival from Dortmund in 2014 and with sixteen goals in his last thirteen appearances it would be no huge shock to see him find the net at some point this week.
