Both Birmingham City and Bristol City enjoyed emphatic mid-week wins in the League Cup and they will each be hopeful of building on this success by collecting all three points in the West Midlands on Saturday afternoon. It was Bristol City who got off to the best start in the 2017/18 campaign with the Robins enjoying a fine 3-1 home win over Barnsley with Bobby Reid scoring twice at Ashton Gate. They followed this up by thrashing Plymouth Argyle to the tune of 5-0 in the League Cup  and they will be looking to continue the momentum this weekend.

For their part, Birmingham City struggled through what was a thoroughly disappointing 2016/17 campaign during which they dropped from a play-off position towards the relegation zone. Just two wins from their last twelve Championship games left them desperately close to the danger zone but they managed to cling onto life in the second tier, although their pre-season campaign has been pretty hit and miss to be fair.

Indeed the Blues have been rather quiet in the summer transfer window and it is hard to see how they are in a better position at the start of 2017/18 than they were at the end of the last campaign, especially so since they went down 1-0 to Ipswich Town in their opening Championship outing last weekend.

Historically, Birmingham City may have the upper hand in this fixture with five wins in the last six meetings between the sides, however Bristol City head into this weekend’s clash looking extremely strong and confidence will certainly be high in the visitors’ camp following their recent wins. Both sides should manage to find the net at some point but we’ll be going with Bristol City at what looks a pretty generous price of 2/1 on the outright market.

Our tip: Back Bristol City to win at 2/1 with William Hill.
