Doubtless there were very good reasons for sacking Gary Rowett but we cannot think of any. Getting rid of a manager when riding high in the Championship would seem a pretty foolhardy thing to do and with no disrespect to Gianfranco Zola his CV is hardly littered with success.
Indeed the treatment of Rowett was nothing short of disgraceful and whilst Gianfranco Zola is certainly a big name, his managerial record doesn’t make impressive reading in the slightest.
Birmingham now stand on the precipice with just four points separating them from the bottom three in the Championship and it is hard to find much sympathy given that they were challenging for promotion with Rowett in the hot-seat earlier in the campaign. Their failure to beat a woeful Rotherham United on Easter Friday was pitiful to say the least and we have no confidence whatsoever that they can get the better of Burton Albion this afternoon, even in front of their home support.
For their part, the Brewers also sit dangerously close to the bottom three some two points below Birmingham, however recent results belie an improvement in their performances and we feel that they can get something from this clash in the West Midlands.
Indeed we’d go one better than that. Birmingham are winless in their last eight Championship outings and show little in the way of fighting spirit, therefore Burton have a massive chance to ease their relegation worries by taking all three points at St Andrews this afternoon. We’ll be backing them to do just that.
