This season’s Championship title race looks set to go down to the wire with Brighton & Hove Albion and Newcastle United continuing to fight it out at the top of the table. The Seagulls sit a point ahead of the Magpies courtesy of their emphatic 3-0 win over promotion hopefuls Reading at the weekend but can they make it three wins on the bounce when they welcome Rafael Benitez’ side to the south coast on Tuesday evening?
The Magpies slipped up in their title challenge by only managing a 2-2 draw at home to Bristol City. Indeed the Robins soared into a two-goal lead inside the first 22 minutes but Benitez’ men pulled it level after the break with an own-goal from Bristol’s Korey Smith and a late header from Ciaran Clark. The hosts were unable to find the winner however and they therefore fall a point behind their main title opponents heading into this week’s all-important meeting.
This promises to be an action-packed affair and with much at stake we’re anticipating a few goals along the way. Brighton & Hove Albion are extremely solid on home turf and should pose Newcastle United plenty of problems. Indeed Chris Hughton’s men haven’t suffered a single league defeat at the Falmer Stadium since going down 2-0 to Brentford in early September and we don’t envisage that proud home record coming to an end on Tuesday evening.
They will certainly be pushed all the way by a Magpies side desperate to keep up with their main title opponents, however the visitors haven’t been at their most impressive away from home and we don’t envisage them coming away with anything for their troubles. Benitez’ men were fortunate to claw their back from two goals down at the weekend to force a draw at St James’ Park but should they fall behind to the Seagulls, they won’t be presented with many opportunities of finding their way back and a home win looks excellent value to us at 8/5 with William Hill.
