The two-horse Championship title race is no longer that with Reading and Huddersfield Town also very much in the running to finish the season in pole position. Nine points now separate the top four in the Championship table and whilst many may see this as a sizeable gap, the fact that all of the top teams are dropping points with reckless abandon means that the race remains wide open.
Newcastle United hold a slender one-point lead over Brighton & Hove Albion who in turn enjoy a four-point advantage over third-placed Huddersfield Town. Reading sit another four points behind the Terriers although the Royals will be confident of narrowing that gap at the weekend when they travel to the south coast.
Reading’s 1-0 defeat to Huddersfield Town was a bitter blow to their promotion ambitions but they are nevertheless far from dead and buried. Indeed this result put to an end a six-game winning run in the Championship for the Royals and manager Jaap Stam will doubtless be demanding a much improved performance in this weekend’s clash with Brighton & Hove Albion.
The Seagulls show few signs of abating as they chase Newcastle United all the way. Chris Hughton’s men have suffered just a single Championship defeat in their last seven outings, this being against in-form side Huddersfield Town earlier this month. They have been particularly solid at the Falmer Stadium and one has to go back to early September to find their last league defeat on home turf. Indeed their last home defeat in all competitions was at the hands of Reading in third round of the EFL Cup and we fully expect the Seagulls to fully avenge for this by collecting all three points on the south coast this weekend.
