Lewis Hamilton will be desperate to kick-start his World Championship challenge and a victory on home turf at Silverstone would do nicely thank you very much. The Mercedes driver sits some 20 points behind arch-rival Sebastian Vettel as things stand following disappointing performances in both Austria and Azerbaijan, however whilst there is clearly still a long way to go, Hamilton admits that his chances of closing the gap on Vettel are getting slimmer as time goes on.
“I don't have a crystal ball but it doesn't look great,” the former world champion said. “There is a long way to go. The bigger the gap gets, the more the pressure builds. Twenty points behind is 20 points behind. It's not great but it could be 30-something. Of course, there is a hit when you get a penalty and start eighth rather than third. It makes a difference but it is not the end of the world. I got the best points I could.”
Silverstone has been pretty kind to Hamilton in recent years with the driver winning the British Grand Prix four times. In contrast, Sebastian Vettel doesn't boast a good record at the track with no wins there since 2009 and just two podium finishes in the last five seasons. These statistics won't be lost on both drivers and whilst Vettel's car may be an improvement on past seasons, we're nevertheless leaning heavily towards the Brit on this occasion.
Hamilton may have disappointed of late but he has demonstrated that he possesses the pace over one lap with six pole positions secured and a fastest lap time on five occasions. The last four British Grand Prix' have seen him set the fastest lap and/or enjoy pole position and he will be confident of narrowing the gap on Vettel by pulling it all together at Silverstone and reigniting his title bid.
