It is unclear what is happening at Brunton Park these days. The Cumbrians launched their season in excellent fashion and embarked upon a tremendous fifteen-game unbeaten run in the league, however the wheels have well and truly come off their campaign and they have now gone nearly ten hours of football without scoring a single goal.
As a result Keith Curle’s men have dropped from third to sixth position in League Two over the past several weeks and the long-suffering fans are starting to get a little fed up. Little wonder given that their last four away games took them some 2300 miles for a mere three points. It’s no surprise that crowds at Brunton Park have started to fall and we don’t envisage things getting any better when Crewe Alexandra come to town on Saturday afternoon.
Crewe have been battling in the lower reaches of League Two for much of the season and whilst they are far from danger as regards relegation is concerned, the best they can hope for is a mid-table position. Nevertheless their recent form has been thoroughly impressive and following a 4-0 thrashing at the hands of Hartlepool United last month, they have since managed three excellent wins from their subsequent four league outings.
Promotion hopefuls Portsmouth were beaten 1-0 at Fratton Park and both Crawley Town and Colchester United were also despatched with Alexandra keeping a clean sheet in all three games. Given that Carlisle United have failed to find the net in their last six matches, we expect the visitors to manage a fourth clean-sheet in five outings and as such we’ll be going for a Crewe Alexandra win-to-nil at a pretty healthy 5/1 with Paddy Power.
