Championship Top Scorer 2018/19 Betting Tips and Odds

Quick Tips:

When betting on the top scorer in any football league, it pays to look back at what happened in the previous season and it was Matej Vydra (21) who topped the scoring charts in the Championship.

The Czech striker is likely to be lining up for Derby County again this season, with the forward’s proposed move to Leeds falling through due to a failure to agree personal terms. Frank Lampard was clearly banking on Vydra leaving but might now find room for him in a Rams team expected to play an attacking 4-3-3 formation.

Lewis Grabban Worth a Look

Lewis Grabban managed a combined twenty goals for Sunderland and Aston Villa last season and is a predator at Championship level, although it is Benik Afobe who has been installed as the market leader and there’s a clear reason why Stoke City are going to spend £10 million on the forward.

The 25-year-old has previously been prolific for MK Dons and Wolves, with a spell at Bournemouth not really working out although this is a player who can find the net in the second tier of English football and could be worth punting on with one of your free bets. He looked dangerous at Molineux towards the back end of the last campaign as his goals helped fire Wanderers to the Premier League.

Grabban is going to be playing centre forward for a Nottingham Forest team who have spent big bucks this summer, with the Midlands club aiming to replicate the success of Wolves last term. The forward can clearly thrive at this level and is another player who looks like guaranteed Championship goals.

Look Beyond the Favourites

Perhaps this is a market where it could pay to look beyond the favourites at the best bookmakers, with Sean Maguire catching the eye at a far bigger price. The Preston striker was affected by injury last season but still managed to show an eye for goal and he’s been banging them in for North End during the summer friendlies.

Similarly, Britt Assombalonga is trading north of 21.00 and the Middlesbrough forward has shown a keen eye for goal when playing for Peterborough, Nottingham Forest and his current club, although there’s a slight trade-off in the sense that Boro are a defensive-minded team under Tony Pulis.

Jay Rodriguez will hope to make hay while the sun shines in the Championship, with West Brom among the favourites to land promotion, while Leon Clarke was a good source of goals for Sheffield United last season and he could provide a cutting edge for the Blades once again.

Scott Hogan could be a striker leaving Aston Villa this summer although if the former Brentford man can have an injury-free campaign, we could also be looking at a twenty-goal haul from a talented forward in need of regular game time.

Keep an Eye on Bamford

A player that catches the eye following a potential £10 million move to Leeds United is Patrick Bamford, with the 24-year-old striker having enjoyed a series of successful loan spells during his career thus far.

While on the books at Chelsea between 2012-17, the forward was among the goals for MK Dons, Derby and Middlesbrough, with the Teeside club taking a punt on Bamford although he’s now become the number nine for Leeds United.

Jack Marriott was the leading scorer in League One last season for Peterborough and Derby have taken a chance on the former Luton forward to integrate himself into the squad at Championship level. He’s another that could go well at big odds.
