These two sides would probably have preferred to avoid each other in this last-eight tie, however it sets us up with what looks set to be a thrilling quarter-final clash. It could equally prove to be a thoroughly dismal damp-squib of a match however and we must hope that both managers will be looking at this competition as a priority and not as something of a hindrance.
Given that we are only a couple of matches away from a Wembley final, it would be nice to assume that Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte will be desperate to steer a path towards some silverware and this will surely prove to be the case on Monday evening. Chelsea are flying high in the Premier League but they are unencumbered by European distractions this season and the FA Cup isn’t going to cause Conte’s squad any huge problems one wouldn’t think.
This isn’t the case with Manchester United and whilst they shouldn’t be presented with too many problems by FK Rostov in the Europa League tonight, Mourinho will be affording that competition the utmost importance given that the Red Devils are favourites to win it and this would lead them into next season’s Champions League irrespective of their Premier League position at the end of the season.
Will this have a bearing on Mourinho’s line-up on Monday? It certainly will. United already have the EFL Cup in the trophy cabinet this season thanks to a 3-2 win over Southampton last month and there is little to suggest that the Red Devils boss won’t be taking the FA Cup just as seriously. Indeed whilst many will be predicting a damp squib of a match on Monday evening, we’re anticipating a thoroughly entertaining end-to-end affair which should contain a few goals along the way. Chelsea are unsurprisingly odds-on favourites to win although we’ll be going for Over 3.5 goals in what looks set to be something of a goal-filled encounter at Stamford Bridge.
