A glamour fixture this most certainly is not. Cowdenbeath are currently the worst side in the four senior Scottish divisions and with a mere seven points from their fourteen league matches this season, things aren’t going too well down at Central Park.
Many Scottish football grounds have an ‘old school’ feel about them, most notably the likes of Somerset Park, Palmerston Park and Stark’s Park. Cowdenbeath’s Central Park belongs to another era entirely and in all fairness it has little to offer in the way of comforts and facilities. This is perhaps part of its charm and it is also a reason why many south of the border have adopted the ‘Blue Brazil’ as their Scottish club.
We all love an underdog and Cowdenbeath are usually just that, irrespective of who they are actually playing. Tuesday evening’s visitors Stenhousemuir may be fourth in Scotland’s fourth tier, however they are odds-on favourites to take three more points from Cowdenbeath’s grasp and push them further towards the precipice.
The number of fans at Central Park usually numbers little more than a couple of hundred and we don’t expect them to be served up a thrilling and action-packed evening’s entertainment on Tuesday. Indeed there remains a distinct possibility that there may be no football on offer whatsoever given that Cowdenbeath’s previous two matches have been cancelled due to the adverse weather conditions.
Assuming that this game does indeed take place, we don’t envisage the few home fans having too much to cheer about on Tuesday evening. Excitement is usually in short supply in this part of Fife and the Blue Brazil have been lacking on that particular front this season, even by their own standards. Cowdenbeath have failed to register a single win since 12th August and while the visitors are hardly a massive price at 10/11 for the win, this does offer exceptional value given the home side’s poor form.
In all honesty it will be shame should Cowdenbeath drop out of the Scottish League entirely. It can be a thoroughly dismal place to visit and there is little to attract those used to more customer-friendly facilities, however it is football as it used to be and this in itself is becoming rather hard to find these days. Nevertheless another nail in Cowdenbeath’s coffin will be hammered in on Tuesday evening and they will move ever closer to the grim reality of relegation.
