Sunderland, along with north-east neighbours Newcastle United and Middlesbrough, are perennial underachievers and once again they find themselves looking into the abyss as they ponder their fate in the top-flight.

The Black Cats sit rock-bottom of the Premier League, a position which they should be accustomed to by now, and with the business end of the campaign fast approaching, manager David Moyes really needs to pull his finger out and figure out a way of getting a few more points on the board.

Indeed many predicted that Sunderland had turned a corner when they demolished Crystal Palace to the tune of 4-0 at Selhurst Park earlier this month, however this particular corner has been turned many times in the past and ultimately led to nothing. Subsequently the Black Cats went on to lose by the same scoreline against Southampton at the Stadium of Light the following weekend and one has to say that their chances of success at Goodison Park on Saturday afternoon look pretty bleak.

For their part, the Toffees have been rather good of late with Ronald Koeman’s men enjoying an unbeaten run of eight games in the Premier League as we head into this weekend’s clash. Indeed with comprehensive recent wins over Manchester City, Southampton and Bournemouth, we believe that victory this weekend should be considered something of a banker.

Clearly the Black Cats will have their part to play and Everton have been less than impressive at the back, this defensive fragility exposed by Bournemouth as they contributed three of the nine goals in the 6-3 thriller at Goodison earlier this month. Indeed with Sunderland banging four past Crystal Palace in their last away game, we expect the visitors to manage a consolation effort on Merseyside this weekend.

Our tip: Back Everton to win and both teams to score at 2/1 with Ladbrokes.
