This week’s domestic football action is limited to an FA Cup third-round tie on Monday evening and two EFL semi-final clashes on Tuesday and Wednesday. This is our full offering until until the Championship clash between Sheffield United and Sheffield Wednesday on Friday evening, however with all three of this week’s cup matches being televised (FA Cup on BT Sport 2 and EFL Cup on Sky Sports), there is much to keep us occupied.
The action gets underway this evening at the Amex Stadium as Brighton & Hove Albion renew their rivalry with Crystal Palace in the third round of the FA Cup. This will be the first competitive English match in which the Video Assistant Referee comes into play and given that it has found favour on the continent, it will be interesting whether it will be called upon in tonight’s match on the south coast.
On Tuesday evening we have the first of the two EFL Cup semi-finals with Manchester City locking horns with Championship side Bristol City at the Etihad Stadium. The Robins did well to knock Manchester United out of the tournament in the last round, however the Citizens are undefeated in domestic competition this season and we don’t envisage them slipping-up this week.
Chelsea and Arsenal go head-to-head in the other EFL Cup semi-final on Wednesday evening. The Blues were held to a draw by Championship side Norwich City in their weekend FA Cup third-round clash while Arsenal were dumped out of the competition courtesy of a 4-2 defeat to Nottingham Forest. As such both sides will be motivated to bounce back in this midweek clash, however who, if anyone, will come out on top at Stamford Bridge?
Here’s what we think…
