Newcastle United’s hold on top spot in the Championship was placed under severe pressure thanks to their 3-1 defeat at St James’ Park on Saturday afternoon. Teenage sensation Ryan Sessegnon banged in two against the Magpies in the second half as the league leaders were stunned in front of an expectant home support and the Cottagers will be confident of making it two on the bounce when they face struggling Blackburn Rovers on Tuesday evening.
Slaviša Jokanović’s men looked pin sharp as they ran rings around the Tynesiders at the weekend, however it was 16-year-old full-back Sessegnon who completely stole the show as Fulham grabbed their fifth win in seven Championship outings. Indeed the Cottagers are one of the in-form sides in the Championship and we certainly don’t envisage them encountering too many problems when they go head-to-head with Blackburn Rovers on Tuesday.
Tony Mowbray’s men are struggling badly this season although whilst they have sat firmly in the relegation zone for much of the campaign they are level on points with fourth-bottom side Bristol City and enjoy a game-in-hand over their main rivals for the drop. Nevertheless we certainly cannot make a case for the visitors on this occasion, especially as they are up against high-flying Fulham. Rovers helped their cause substantially in late February/early March when they recorded back-to-back win against Derby County and Wigan Athletic but we’re far from confident about their chances of managing anything at Craven Cottage, not even a consolation goal.
