A trip to Cappielow tends to be a thoroughly enjoyable affair, the old-school football ground usually producing an excellent atmosphere whatever the occasion. Tuesday evening’s match with Dundee United should be a thrilling encounter and we’re expecting a sizeable crowd in Greenock in what is a hugely important game for both sides.
Visitors Dundee United were fairly confident of heading back up to the Scottish Premiership at the first time of asking and while this may yet prove to be the case, they first need to negotiate the play-offs, no easy task in itself. The Tangerines finished the regular season in third place, disappointing draws against Dumbarton and Greenock Morton depriving them of the chance of overtaking Falkirk in the Scottish Championship table.
Can United grab themselves a first-leg advantage in this play-off semi-final or will they head back to Tannadice with their tails between their legs? We believe that it will be the former. These two sides have been pretty evenly-matched throughout the campaign, a 2-1 win for Dundee United in their first meeting of 2016/17 being followed by a goal-less draw and two subsequent 1-1 stalemates.
Nevertheless Morton’s recent form has been extremely disappointing with no wins in their last nine Championship outings and a mere four points collected during that time. This doesn’t bode too well ahead of a clash with a Dundee United outfit which are unbeaten in six games and whilst this is almost certain to be a very evenly-fought affair, we believe that the visitors will edge this encounter. Dundee United have been pretty solid on their travels whilst Morton haven’t won at Cappielow since early March, therefore we’ll be going for a United victory in Greenock on Tuesday evening.
