Huddersfield Town looked set to chase Newcastle United all the way as they battled for a place in the top two, however their automatic promotion ambitions have been dealt several fatal blows over the past few weeks. The Terriers were the in-form Championship team as the season fast approached its conclusion, however a 4-0 defeat at Bristol City last month signalled a downturn in fortunes for David Wagner’s men.
The Terriers followed that disappointing result with another defeat, this time to relegation strugglers Burton Albion. A subsequent 3-0 win over Norwich City suggested that things were set to improve but a 2-0 defeat Nottingham Forest suggested otherwise.
Indeed with just four points from their last three outings, Huddersfield Town remain unlikely candidates for a top-two finish despite enjoying a game-in-hand over the sides above them in the Championship table. Nevertheless should they manage three points this weekend then Wagner will be confident of at the very least securing third place at the end of the campaign.
Fulham will be no pushovers however and with the Cottagers also very much in the hunt for a play-off position, this promises to be a thrilling encounter between two sides which will be attacking from the outset. Slaviša Jokanović’s men are in the top-six purely on goal-difference with seventh-placed Leeds United sitting level on 73 points and the Fulham boss will be desperate for his side to collect all three points.
This is something which we can see happening. The Cottagers have been pretty impressive on the road in recent months and their last away day ended in a 3-1 win at Norwich City. Indeed Fulham have lost just twice in their last eight matches away from Craven Cottage with this excellent run including an impressive victory over Newcastle United at St James’ Park. Can they get the better of Huddersfield Town this weekend? We certainly think so.
