The wide gulf in class between Celtic and Inverness was illustrated earlier this month when the Hoops demolished the Highlanders to the tune of 6-0 in the fifth round of the Scottish Cup and whilst we don’t anticipate a similarly emphatic scoreline on Wednesday evening, we’re in little doubt that another Celtic victory will take them a step further towards the inevitable Premiership title.
Brendan Rodgers’ side can afford to take their feet off the gas considerably now that they enjoy an unassailable 24-point lead at the top of the table, however there is no reason why they should want to do that. The Hoops have dropped just two points this season so far – coincidentally in the first meeting between these sides at the Caledonian Stadium – and they will be looking to continue this excellent record until the end of the season.
There is absolutely no reason on earth why they shouldn’t achieve this. Celtic are by far the strongest side in the Scottish Premiership with the chasing pack literally miles behind at the moment. This is illustrated by their massive lead at the top of the table and Inverness Caledonian Thistle are certain to be just the latest victims as the Celtic juggernaut rolls on to yet another title.
Will Inverness even manage a consolation goal along the way? Probably not. The Hoops have leaked just three goals in their last twelve games and put six past the Highlanders without reply in their last meeting. Inverness may have hauled themselves off the foot of the table courtesy of their 2-1 win over Rangers at the weekend but there is little to suggest that they have what it takes to find a way through the Celtic defence on Wednesday evening.
