Mansfield were one of a handful of clubs which only just failed to make it into the 2016/17 League Two play-offs, however the Stags are once again hoping that they can make a challenge for a play-off place at the very least at the end of the current campaign. Having appointed former Crawley Town and Boston United boss Steve Evans as manager, the Stags are clearly aiming for higher things and they wasted little time in revamping the squad during the summer months with no less than eleven new players signed even before the transfer window was flung open.
Mansfield eventually finished 12th at the end of 2016/17 but only four points separated them from the play-offs in what was a closely-fought division. Luton Town made it into the play-offs having finished fourth in League Two but they lost out on a Wembley appearance to eventual play-off final winners Blackpool.
Luton were once one of the bigger clubs in English football and were a regular in the top-flight, however that was many years ago and boss Nathan Jones will be hopeful of lifting the Hatters back up the Football league, starting with a promotion to League One at the end of 2017/18.
Lincoln City are another ambitious club which will be hopeful of achieving back-to-back promotions after rising back into the Football League as National League champions at the end of last season while Exeter City will once again be hopeful of mounting another play-off challenge after falling at the semi-final stage in 2016/17.
