It is sometimes easy to forget that Leeds United were once one of the foremost sides in the country and whilst they are still undoubtedly a large club, the fact is that they have now been out of the Premier League for more seasons than they have been it. The Whites could be back in the top-flight next season if they continue to perform as they have been, however they face a tough challenge on Friday evening when they face promotion rivals Derby County.
Leeds sit comfortably in the play-off places following what has been a pretty decent season so far. Their only Championship defeats since October have been against the top two sides and they will be pretty confident of avenging for their defeat to Derby County at Pride Park earlier this season.
Indeed manager Garry Monk has worked wonders at Elland Road since his arrival from Premier League side Swansea City during the summer with the side now looking like genuine promotion contenders. Whether this proves to be the case remains to be seen but they can go some way towards that aim by sealing the three points on Friday evening.
It certainly won't be easy. Derby County are usually to be found amongst the promotion contenders towards the end of the season and they have been enjoying some excellent performances of late. They may have suffered a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Norwich City in their last Championship outing but they made amends for that by knocking Premier League side West Bromwich Albion out of the FA Cup at the weekend.
Can they make it two on the bounce when they travel to Elland Road this weekend? Perhaps they can although Leeds United will be in no mood to slip-up as they attempt to keep the pressure on the top two. Nevertheless neither side will want to drop points as we rapidly head towards the business end of the season and with both teams looking pretty evenly matched, an action-packed encounter should see the spoils shared at Elland Road this weekend.
