Only a few weeks ago Lincoln City were having things pretty much their own way at the top of the National League, however that is now far from the case with a rampant Tranmere Rovers side making life difficult for the Imps as we rapidly approach the close of the season.
The National League is now very much a two-horse race as these two sides look set to battle it out all the way to the wire with third-placed Forest Green Rovers now fallen very much from contention as things stand.
Lincoln remain in pole position thanks to their superior goal difference over Tranmere, however with the sides neck-and-neck on 85 points apiece, the Imps will be desperate to put some light between themselves and their title rivals on Tuesday evening.
The Imps haven’t had things all their own way in recent weeks with a couple of stumbles of late, most notably a 2-0 defeat at Boreham Wood last month and a disappointing 1-1 draw at Sutton United. Nevertheless they head into Tuesday evening’s encounter on the back of a three-game winning run and we don’t envisage this coming to an end this week.
For their part, Chester have been holding their own in the division although they have threatened neither the relegation zone nor the play-offs. With just seven points between themselves and the bottom four they aren’t too far from danger although we don’t envisage them becoming embroiled in a relegation battle.
Indeed Chester have been something of a mixed bag with their last four National league outings returning two wins and two defeats. They have impressed on the road recently with wins in each of their last three away games although we believe that this run will end on Tuesday evening. The visitors have been having few problems in front of goal this season but Lincoln City will be determined to cement their position at the top of the table and as such we’ll be backing the Imps to win and the visitors to get onto the scoresheet at some point.
