Lincoln City are National League champions, and worthy champions at that. They held their nerve when threatened by the likes of Tranmere Rovers and Forest Green Rovers and can now look forward to a timely return to the Football League after an absence of five years.
Indeed the Imps have enjoyed a remarkable season, one which the fans will never forget. Whilst the ultimate aim was to bring league football back to the city, their FA Cup run was an achievement which even the most optimistic supporters could hardly have dreamed of. Wins over Championship sides Ipswich Town, Brighton & Hove Albion as well as Premier League outfit Burnley were rewarded with a sixth-round glamour tie with Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.
Unfortunately that was where Lincoln City’s involvement in the competition ended courtesy of a 5-0 hammering in North London, however the side can certainly hold their heads up high as they prepare for life back in the Football League.
As regards their penultimate game of the season with Maidstone United on Tuesday evening, we don’t envisage that the champions will take their feet off the gas in the slightest. They have proven themselves to be the strongest side in the division and whilst they were put under tremendous pressure by Tranmere Rovers over recent weeks, they nevertheless failed to falter and we believe that they will have little trouble in overcoming Maidstone this week.
The home side have been pretty solid in recent outings with just a solitary defeat in their last thirteen National League games, however they will be up against it this week against a Lincoln City side which will be on a massive high following what has been a tremendous season.
