Millwall made it into the League One play-offs by the skin of their teeth with just a single point separating them from seventh-placed Southend United at the end of the regular season, however the Lions’ recent form has been very much a mixed bag. Neil Harris’ men edged a seven-goal thriller at Bristol Rovers last weekend but this came on the back of successive defeats to Fleetwood Town and Oxford United. Indeed Millwall’s inconsistencies make us us rather cautious about backing them to grab a vital win in this play-off semi-final first leg at the Den on Thursday evening.
Millwall’s opponents Scunthorpe United lost 3-1 in their last visit to the Den exactly a month ago, however since then they have enjoyed a 100% record with six consecutive wins including a fine 1-0 victory over promoted side Bolton Wanderers. Indeed the Iron will at this point have been confident of clinching the second automatic promotion place given that Wanderers had been dropping points left, right and centre.
Nevertheless it was all a case of too little too late for Scunny and a play-off place was all that they could achieve. Can they find a way past Millwall in south-east London on Thursday evening or will the Lions enjoy an advantage heading into the second-leg clash at Glanford Park on Sunday evening?
We feel that it will be the former. Millwall may have lost to Oxford in their last home game but prior to that they hadn’t been beaten in front of their own home fans since early December, this run including FA Cup wins over Premier League sides Bournemouth, Watford and Leicester City. Scunthorpe have been less impressive on their travels of late with just two wins in nine away games, making a home win look a particularly solid betting option at odds of 21/20.
