Newcastle United were expected to feature amongst the Championship title contenders towards the end of the season and this has proven to be the case, however they have company at the top in the form of Brighton & Hove Albion and Huddersfield Town as we head into this weekend’s round of fixtures.
The Magpies enjoy a one-point advantage over the Seagulls and a seven point lead over the Terriers although the latter enjoy a game-in-hand. Nevertheless with Rafael Benitez’ men very much in the driving seat as things stand, we don’t expect them to slip up this weekend when they welcome struggling Wigan Athletic to St James’ Park.
The Magpies may have managed just two points from their last three Championship outings but they have been pretty solid throughout the season. A 3-1 defeat at home to Fulham earlier this month should be looked upon as a minor blip and the Tyneside outfit should return to winning ways with relative ease on Saturday afternoon.
For their part, Wigan Athletic have been pretty abysmal since the start of the season and their recent form has seen them lose all-but-one of their last four outings. Away from the DW Stadium they have been hit-and-miss and whilst they have recorded much-needed wins at the likes of Burton Albion, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Birmingham City in recent weeks, they remain firmly in the relegation zone some seven points adrift of safety and their worries won’t be eased at St James’ Park this weekend.
Hosts Newcastle United will be smelling the scent of the Premier League and what better incentive could there possibly be ahead of this match? The business end of the season is fast closing in and the Magpies will be confident of keeping at bay a Wigan side which have found the net just once in their last five Championship outings.
