Over the past few weeks it became blindingly obvious that the race to become next Crystal Palace manager was developing into a two-horse race between Dutchman Frank de Boer and Argentinian Mauricio Pellegrino. Most bookmakers have now completely closed the market after it was announced that the Eagles have finally opted for De Boer.
The former Inter Milan and Ajax boss has long been linked to a number of English top-flight clubs and over the past few weeks the Dutchman has been amongst the frontrunners to fill the shoes of recently-departed Sam Allardyce at Crystal Palace as well as those of Claude Puel who was sacked by Southampton.
It now looks extremely likely that De Boer will finally make his move into the Premier League in time for the start of 2017/18 with several newspapers reporting that the former Rangers midfielder has been given the green light to replace Allardyce at the south London club. Indeed following a rash of bets on such an outcome, the vast majority of bookies have decided that the time is right to pull the plug on the market.
The Ductchman had a disappointing stint with Serie A side Inter Milan which lasted a mere four months last year, however his tenure at Ajax was more successful with De Boer leading the side to four back-to-back Eredivisie titles as well as the Johan Cruyff Shield.
It may be a bit much of Crystal Palace to expect De Boer to lead them to the Premier League title but they will hope that the Dutchman can steer them into a better position than that which saw them finish 14th in the top-flight last season.
