It was almost inevitable really with Rangers falling further behind in the race for the Scottish Premiership title. In all honesty, the Light Blues were never expected to close the gap on champions Celtic as the Hoops continue their utter dominance of the domestic scene, however as things stand, the Ibrox side are far from being 'best of the rest'. Pedro Caixinha was brought in to make improvements although despite sweeping changes being made to the playing squad during the summer months, no improvement has yet been made. Indeed Rangers find themselves in fourth position in the Premiership and following reports of dressing room rifts, the board has decided that enough is enough.

Perhaps the straw which broke the camel's back was the dismal draw with Kilmarnock at Ibrox on Wednesday evening, a game in which the Gers looked to have secured a much-needed win following their exit from the League Cup to Motherwell last weekend, but which ended in a share of the spoils following a late stoppage-time goal for Kilmarnock. Following that result, Caixinha stated that he wasn't concerned about his future with the club although it would appear that this was a final act of bravado for a man which to all intents and purposes was a dead man walking.

Attention will now turn towards his likely replacement and the board will be anxious to get it right this time. The announcement that Caixinha was to take the post wasn't warmly received when it was announced in March, however the leading candidate to take the reins this time around is Aberdeen boss Derek McInnes with the /free-bets going 2/1. His appointment would certainly be a popular one with the fans with the former Rangers midfielder earning for himself plenty of plaudits for his achievements with Aberdeen. The Dons may have played second fiddle to Celtic on all three domestic fronts last season but they are now a force to be reckoned with and look set to once again remain hot on the heels of the league leaders for the rest of the campaign.

Second favourite in the betting is Alex Macleish, the former Gers boss 4/1 to make a return to the Ibrox hot-seat for a second stint. Development squad coach Graeme Murty succeeded in leading the first team to a draw with Celtic last season and he is next in the betting at 6/1 to take the reins in a permanent capacity, ahead of former Nottingham Forest and Derby County boss Billy Davies at 12/1.

With Caixinha out of the picture, Kenny Miller should find an easy route back into the first team once again, however the /free-bets feel that he is worthy of consideration for the managerial position with odds of 12/1 up for grabs that Miller finds himself in the dugout as manager.
