The path appears to be clear for Mauricio Pellegrino to become the next boss of Southampton following the news that Crystal Palace have offered his main rival, Frank de Boer, the managerial position at Selhurst Park. De Boer and Pellegrino were neck and neck in the betting markets for both the Palace and Southampton positions over the past few weeks, however reports earlier this week claimed that De Boer has been given the chance to take over from recently departed Sam Allardyce at the south London club.
As such the market on next Crystal Palace manager was closed and the bookies also slashed the odds on Pellegrino becoming boss at St Mary's with most firms going 1/5 that this proves to be the case. The Argentinian has experience of the English game having coached and played for Liverpool and he would head to these shores having led Spanish side Alaves to the Copa del Rey final as well as steering them into the top half of the Spanish top-flight.
The bookies haven't completely ruled out the possibility that De Boer will decide not to go to Selhurst Park and choose to head to Southampton instead with William Hill going as low as 16/1 that this proves to be the case. Frenchman Patrick Vieira has seen his odds fall to 14/1 following a flurry of bets on the New York City FC boss, while Reading manager Jaap Stam is as low as 16/1 to take the reins at St Mary's.
