Wigan Athletic's season has been an unmitigated disaster with relegation to League One confirmed by their 1-0 defeat to Reading late last month. They parted company with Gary Caldwell in October following a dismal start to the campaign and replaced him in the managerial hot-seat with Warren Joyce. Failure to turn around the side's fortunes ended in Joyce being sacked and with Graham Barrow acting as caretaker manager, the search will now be on for a suitable replacement before the new season kicks-off.

Michael Appleton is an early front-runner for the position, the Oxford United boss leading his side to promotion in 2015/16 as well as steering them into the Football League Trophy final. The 'U's only just missed out on a play-off place this season by a mere four points and the bookies believe that Appleton would relish the chance to lift Wigan Athletic back into the Championship at the first time of asking with Bet Victor going 5/2 that he steps into the breach during the close-season.

Next up in the betting is Alan Stubbs at 3/1, the former Rotherham United boss out of work following his sacking by the Millers in October 2016. Gary Caldwell is third in the market at 7/1, the Chesterfield manager in charge at the Proact Stadium since January but unable to turn around the club's fortunes. Now that the Spirites have fallen into League Two, Caldwell would perhaps relish the opportunity to return to Wigan following his departure in October.
