Nottingham Forest tend to kick off their campaigns in confident fashion, however any optimism will have been lessened by the fact that they only just avoided dropping down to League One at the end of 2016/17. A thoroughly disappointing season saw City finish 21st in the Championship table and boss Mark Warburton will be hopeful of better things in the upcoming campaign.
Can Forest kick things off with a welcome three points against Millwall on Friday evening? The Lions will be hopeful of continuing their momentum following an excellent 2016/17 season during which they achieved promotion to the Championships via the play-offs. The South London side edged past Scunthorpe 3-2 on aggregate in the semi-finals before beating Bradford City 1-0 at Wembley.
Hardly surprisingly they will be in pretty high spirits as they look forward to life in the second tier and whilst we're far from confident that they will make any real threat on the play-off places, they are more than capable of consolidating themselves into the top half of the table and will pose Forest with a tough challenge at the end of the week.
Nevertheless Warburton's men have impressed in their pre-season campaign with back-to-back wins against Notts County (2-0), Mansfield Town (4-0) and Girona FC (2-1), while their last outing saw them hold Premier League side Burnley to a 1-1 draw at the City Ground. We believe that whilst the visitors will prove tough opposition, Forest can edge their way to an opening-day victory and launch their 2017/18 campaign in the best possible fashion on Friday evening.
