Reigning European champions Portugal got off to a poor start in their World Cup qualifiers when they crashed to a 2-0 defeat to Switzerland, however their response to that bitter disappointment has been pretty emphatic. Ronaldo and co. romped to a 6-0 win over Andorra and repeated that scoreline by thrashing the Faroe Islands in their following outing. A hat-trick of victories saw them demolish Latvia to the tune of 4-1 and with 16 goals reeled off and just one conceded, the Portuguese will be confident of making it three in a row when they host Hungary this weekend.
Can Portugal keep the pressure on the table-topping Swiss by grabbing a vital win this weekend? They will certainly be in for a tough time from a Hungarian side which have managed seven points from their four qualifiers. Bernd Storck’s men have won their last two outings with six goals scored and none in reply, however we’re not too confident of their chances against the European champions.
Portugal have been enjoying some excellent form since their defeat to Switzerland and this form is very hard to ignore. We believe that they will win relatively comfortably this weekend and we also expect Ronaldo to feature in the goal-scoring.
Ronaldo may not have been hitting the heights of recent years at Real Madrid but he has nevertheless banged in five goals in his last six appearances at club level. He played no part in the defeat to the Swiss but he banged in four against Andorra and scored against the Faroes and Latvia, therefore we wouldn’t be surprised were he to add some more to his season total by finding the net against Hungary this weekend.
