Sheffield Wednesday's promotion ambitions shuddered to a halt as they 4-3 on penalties to Huddersfield Town in the play-offs at the end of last season, however the Owls were impressive throughout the campaign and not for nothing are they amongst the favourites at 3/1 to make it up to the Premier League at the end of 2017/18.
Nevertheless Carlos Carvalhal's men were given something of a harsh reality check when they were beaten 2-0 by Scottish Premiership side Rangers in their final pre-season friendly last weekend and whilst there were plenty of positives to be taken from that encounter, it was nevertheless a pretty disjointed and disappointing display at Hillsborough.
The Owls had few chances to score and their play was slow and predictable, Carvalhal himself blaming nerves for their disappointing display. Nevertheless nerves need to be put on the back-burner this weekend when they travel to Deepdale this weekend and anything less than a thorough performance by the visitors could result in them heading home with nothing for their troubles.
As for Preston North End, new boss Alex Neil will be looking to get off to the best possible start with his new club and having suffered just one defeat in their five pre-season outings we fancy them to manage something for their efforts this weekend.
Either way, this looks set to be a closely-fought match and a share of the spoils is the most likely outcome at Deepdale. The Owls will be looking to once again feature in the play-off places but we fancy Preston to deny them an opening-day victory by holding them to a tightly-fought draw.
